Word from Dean

Welcome to the Centre for Foundation and General Studies (CFGS) at Universiti Selangor (UNISEL).

My journey with UNISEL began back in 2005 as a Foundation in Science student. This experience was pivotal in shaping my academic and professional path, culminating in receiving the Chancellor Award at graduation and an opportunity to pursue my postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom. Returning to UNISEL as the Deputy Dean of Academic in 2016, I spent over six years contributing to our centre’s growth before taking on the role of Dean.

CFGS, founded in 2014, operates across both the Shah Alam and Bestari Jaya campuses. We offer a range of foundation programs, including Foundation in Science, Information Technology, Management, Arts, Islamic Studies, and B. Ed. TESL, as well as a Huffaz track. Additionally, we manage various subjects under General Studies (MPU), English Servicing subjects, and other modern languages like Mandarin and Arabic.

Our centre is deeply committed to academic excellence. Despite our primary focus on foundation programs, our faculty includes several Associate Professors, providing students with the opportunity to learn from distinguished experts from the outset. We ensure that all our programs are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), with new offerings such as Foundation in Arts and Foundation in Islamic Studies introduced in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Research and innovation are at the heart of our mission. Through our mentor-mentee programs, senior lecturers guide their colleagues in applying for grants, conducting research, and publishing papers. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and professional growth. Our foundation students are active participants in these efforts, having been part of the STEM UNISEL team that has consistently won gold at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) since 2018.

We are also dedicated to community service and sustainability. Our General Studies courses include community work, instilling a sense of social responsibility in our students. In line with UNISEL’s vision for a green campus, we integrate sustainability into our research and courses, such as Green Awareness and Sustainability in Community (GASCO) and Wellness and Healthy Lifestyle. These initiatives reflect our commitment to promoting sustainable practices and awareness.

At CFGS, we strive to develop well-rounded individuals who excel academically and possess essential soft skills such as critical thinking and creativity. Through various initiatives, including innovation competitions, the Foundation Students Society (FOSS), and industrial visits, we provide students with opportunities to learn from real-world experiences and prepare for their future careers.

We align our efforts with the transformative vision of our Vice-Chancellor and President, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohammad Redzuan Othman, and with Selangor’s Vision to be a Smart and Caring State. Our goal is to support this vision by nurturing students who are not only academically proficient but also socially responsible and innovative.

Leading CFGS is a role I embrace with gratitude and determination. My personal journey with UNISEL has come full circle, and I am dedicated to ensuring that every student receives the same opportunities and support that I did. Together, we will continue to build a centre that prepares our students for a bright and successful future.

Thank you for visiting our website. We invite you to explore our programs and initiatives further.

Sincerely,

Dr. Hazeeq Hazwan bin Azman
